The Background!

Mr Reid, the founder, is a highly accomplished businessman. His entrepreneurial journey started as a commodity trader and has now expanded to include a diverse group of companies. He began working in the international trade market in 1985. He launched his first private company which facilitated trade between the Brazilian domestic products and the United States of America, India, Bangladesh and China. He also opened his first wholesale storage facility in São Paulo, Brazil.

In 1997, he opened his first distribution center in city of São Paulo, Brazil. The center had a total area of 215,278.2 square feet (20,000.00 square meters). The distribution center included office facilities and two warehouses that provided storage and distribution for G. Reid’s growing import business. The company also increased the logistic operation by creating a dedicated road transportation company. The fleet consisted of articulated trucks, vans and other related vehicles to provide distribution of goods between south, southeast and central Brazil. In 1998, he expanded the proprietary distribution network and fleet to take in the north and northeast areas of Brazil.

In 1999, new suppliers were added, due to the increased demand for new products. The portfolio of products included the import of fabrics, soft and alcoholic beverages, PP, household consumer electronics, car, truck and van tires, bulk paper and industrial pulp from countries such as: Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Holland, Finland, Sweden, France, Hungary, South Africa, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Argentina.

In 2000, SAVVY MERCHANT began to focus on the export of hard and soft commodities from Brazil. He began to export non-ferrous metals such as copper, nickel, scraps of iron (HMS1 & 2) and aluminium, mainly to China. He also secured a position as a key importer and distributor for OTR Tyres for the Brazilian Mining Industry.

Due to market demand in 2001, the company opened two branch offices; in Ciudad de Panamá – Panamá and Montevideo – Uruguay. Also opened were three new investment companies: the first bonded warehouse facility at the Montevideo Port, that comprised 58,000 square meters, the second to build CKD equipment in the free trade zone and the third to import and export goods. At the same time, new Brazilian branch offices and distribution centers were added to incorporate all regions of Brazil.

A milestone for SAVVY MERCHANT GROUP was achieved when they secured the first and final rights to open a Copper Mine in Lindoeste, Brazil. 2009 also saw the signing of a joint venture between one of the largest commodity trading companies in the world, for the supply of Copper Concentrate Products to Peru and Mexico, by building a flotation ore plant at Canaã dos Carajás – Pará – Brazil.

Like all Commodity Trading and Import/Export Companies, there have been many challenges between 2011 and 2016. Due to the astute business management by the CEO, SAVVY MERCHANT GROUP has navigated many market shifts by constant and never ending market analysis.

In June, 2015 SAVVY MERCHANT GROUP began to develop other areas of Brazil’s economy and export business. Its focus has moved towards Brazil’s Agribusiness and Foodstuff export opportunities.
